Review of Various Artists - Relay The Fallback EXCLUSIVE EMUSIC ONLY
06/12/2009 - 8:01pm
The rising Moodgadget label specializes in the kind of dance-optional, texture-obsessive electronic music that could easily descend into "joyless" territory. Luckily, it does not — there is a charming, almost cute feel to Moodgadget's approach. It's wispy but not weak; delicate but rarely cloying.
Praveen's "Slip Slop" opens cleanly enough with an electronic clip-clop and a fetching piano line, until layers of sound start disappearing, whirring back to life and then malfunctioning again; it's an entrancing three minutes, and an excellent preview of what follows. Shigeto's "Winter Thaw" is an aptly titled trudge through melting snowpack, while D. Gookin's twee "Remember" is a charming bit of Junior Boys-esque synth-pop. Two of the strongest tracks here are also the quietest: A Setting Sun — who released the excellent Empty Sound last year — contribute the gorgeous "Sun Position 6pm on a Summer Sunday," its tiny wave-crashes and plinks almost washed out by its gorgeous, celestial pulses. Benoit Pioulard's "Kids Are Getting Younger (Small Sails remix)" is all whispers and acoustic guitar, like a sad-eyed folk singer lost on a Fennesz record.
